Revit market share in construction industry compared to other designing tools

The creation of Revit was done with architects in mind and it uses the techniques of BIM (Building Information Modelling) to deliver justifiable and reliable designs along with the respective data. Revit is credited with providing data management techniques as well, which proves to be one of the huge advantages for architects and builders over other designing tools such as AutoCAD. Revit enables data modelling based on the building design so as to enhance the design, construction and maintenance phase with a backup of adequate data to help the demolition phase if ever need be. That’s how much Revit focuses on architectural design and development, whereas the other tools such as AutoCAD won’t provide any of these features.

Why Revit?

Revit has a few added features that AutoCAD lacks. AutoCAD’s designs/drawings require special plugins or software suites for the following features which are included within Revit by default:
Revit possesses virtual walkthroughs and site planning tools which one cannot locate in any AutoCAD product unless it’s particularly meant for the building, design and architecture industry
Revit Build Site incorporates energy efficiency analysis and prototyping, with the help of the GreenBuild engine integration
Lighting (not the rendering lighting) and structural analysis with cloud support
Scheduling and visualization techniques
Graphical communication and presentation material

In addition, Revit has other benefits such as 3D modelling or virtual presentations. Moreover, they let you share several smaller models to compile a final master model. Navisworks lets you perform 3D clash detection in the scenery, 4D scheduling and automation, and 5D cost estimations honing in on detail as far as the lighting and structural maintenance procedures. All-in all, Revit has a substantial advantage over AutoCAD for the architect and builder specific projects.

Industry Specific
Considering all of this, you must remember that all the above pertains to the architecture specific projects, so if you talk about a general 2D design and documentation software, there are some advantages for AutoCAD as well. Where Revit has structural engineering capabilities, AutoCAD has solids that are much more reliable and developed compared to the material basics found in Revit. Revit was mainly designed to develop prototypes whereas AutoCAD was developed for the all-round designer.

Where Revit has vibrant simulation, which one can’t find in AutoCAD, the latter’s industry wide reputation lets other software and other platforms to be seamlessly integrated in the AutoCAD development environment. Now some might argue that AutoCAD doesn’t have cable and harness modules that are necessary   for certain structural designs within the development phase as well as for the purpose of aesthetics, these are available in Revit.
